Giant Killer
Top-seeded Champaign St. Thomas More was the victim of a stellar performance by Camp Pt. Central/Augusta Southeastern in the Small School Girl’s Bracket, 49-42. CSE took the lead in the first quarter and never relinquished it to the state’s top-ranked Class 2A team. It was the first time in Classic Girls history that a #16-seed won their opening round game.
Champs Go Down
In addition to St. Thomas More in the Small School Girls Bracket, defending Large School Boys champion North Chicago fell to Rock Island, 72-45, ending a string of ten consecutive wins in Classic play.
Still Undefeated
Rockford Lutheran’s Boys Team won their ninth game….in nine attempts, to remain perfect in Classic play. The top-seeded Crusaders are two-time defending champs in the Small School Boys Bracket. The consecutive win streak trails only South Holland Thornwood, who won 20 consecutive games from 1999-2003, and Galesburg, who won 12 straight from 1981-83.
Reaching the Millennium
Rochester’s Laryn Sapetti reached the 1000-point plateau with 15 points in the Rockets’ opening-round victory over El Paso-Gridley, 55-20.
Tough Day for the Big 12
The newly-configured Big 12 conference (addition of four Peoria Schools) had a rough day in the Girls Large School Bracket, going winless (0-6) on day one. All will be competing for the consolation championship.
Record Breaker
An omission from 2013 in the records – Annawan’s Megan Foes tied the Classic Girls record of eight 3-pointers in last year’s second-round victory over Brimfield, 73-64.
