Day 3 | 2015: Tournament Tidbits

December 31, 2015 by The Classic

Rocky Top

Rock Island and Rockford Lutheran schools will be busy on championship day, as both schools’ boys’ and girls’ teams will be playing for trophies. Rock Island’s boys’ team battled back from a 15-point deficit to beat Zion-Benton in overtime and will play for the LSB championship against Normal U-High at 5:45. The Rock Island girls will face off against Chicago North Lawndale in the LSG championship game at 7:30. For Rockford Lutheran, it will be the girls’ team facing Champaign St. Thomas More in the SSG championship game at 2:15. The Rockford Lutheran boys’ team lost a nail-biter to Bloomington Central Catholic and plays in the 3rd place SSB game at 9:30 a.m.

Trimble is nimble as he shoots his way into the record books

Brandon Trimble of St. Joseph-Ogden etched his name in the State Farm Holiday Classic record book on day three with a 41-point effort against Bishop McNamara. The mark was good enough for fourth all-time in terms of individual scoring performance. In addition to the single game scoring mark, Trimble also equaled the previous all-time best of 18 made field goals in a single game. That record was initially set in 1993, and had stood on its own for more than 20 years until Trimble’s performance.

Call it a comeback

Fans who came to the Shirk Center on Wednesday evening were treated to three straight State Farm Classic, classics. In the 6 p.m. SSB game, Bloomington Central Catholic came back from down 16 to beat Rockford Lutheran 47-42. Then, in the 7:30 LSB contest, Zion-Benton had Rock Island down by as many as 15 points in the third quarter before they came back to tie it with 4 minutes to go. In the early seconds of overtime, Rock Island took its first lead of the game and hung on for a 62-59 win. The final game of the night, featuring Normal U-High and Chicago North Lawndale, appeared to be a snoozer early as Chicago North Lawndale eased its way into an 8-point lead after one quarter of action. U-High battled back to force the game into overtime and outscored North Lawndale 10-5 in the extra period to claim a 62-57 win and a spot in the LSB championship.
