The Chase Continues
Celina VanHyfte of Annawan posted 26 points in the semifinal against Kankakee Bishop Mac in the Girls Small School Bracket, giving her 339 total career points in the State Farm Holiday Classic. She would need a 44-point effort in the 3rd-place game to tie the overall record set by Joey Range of Galesburg. She has already set the Girl’s Tournament standard.
Central Catholic A Fixture
For the eighth straight year, Bloomington Central Catholic will have a representative in the championship round. The streak would be longer if not for a 70-foot buzzer-beating shot by CPCI guard Justin Steffen in 2005, sending the Saints to the 3rd-place game. That shot interrupted a streak that would be 12 consecutive years.
At the Buzzer
Two semifinal games on the Girls side were decided by last second shots. Normal University High downed Morton 52-51 on a last-second shot by Chantel Stonewall, and Kankakee Bishop McNamara earned a berth in the title match with Kyleigh Payne’s rebound layup in their 50-48 win over Annawan.
