Day 2 | 2015: Tournament Tidbits

December 30, 2015 by The Classic

Three Point Specialist

Madi Fischer of Peoria Christian has led her team in scoring both days, scoring 17 in a first round loss to Prairie Central and 14 in a second round win over El Paso-Gridley. Most impressively, Fischer has scored all of her points on three-pointers (9) and free throws (4). She is currently on pace to break the single tournament three-pointer mark of 16 in four games.

Check the Record Books

  • Senior Guard Dakota Bennington of Peoria Christian scored 39 points in his team’s second round (93-79) win over Rock Falls.  Bennington’s effort was good enough to tie him for sixth place all-time in the single game scoring column.
  • Senior Guard Matt Davis of Champaign Centennial went 10-of-10 from the charity stripe in his team’s second round win over Chatham Glenwood. His 100% mark from the free throw line is tied for first all-time with one other player (minimum 10 attempts).
  • Chicago North Lawndale outlasted Morton in four overtimes 48-46, setting a record for the longest game in Classic history (boys or girls). The loss was the first of the season for the defending Class 3A state champion Lady Potters.
  • A year ago, Camp Point Central/Augusta SE was the giant-killer, becoming the first #16 seed to defeat a top-seed when they defeated Champaign St. Thomas More in the Girls’ Small School bracket. Led by Ohio State recruit Tori McCoy, the Sabres exacted revenge with a 59-27 quarterfinal win.

Crusade Continues

Rockford Lutheran continued their winning ways in the Small School Boys bracket, posting their 14th consecutive Classic victory with a two-point victory over El Paso-Gridley. The win moves the Crusaders into a semifinal matchup with Bloomington Central Catholic, a rematch of the last two Small School Boys championship games.

In the Girls Small School bracket, Rockford Lutheran also advanced to the semifinals with a 64-45 quarterfinal win over Fairbury Prairie Central. They now play….Bloomington Central Catholic as well.
