Tidbits from Day 1 Action at the 2022 State Farm Holiday Classic
The Chosen Ones
All four top seeds were victorious on day 1. The biggest upset of the day came when #2 seed Aurora Christian fell to #15 seed Minonk Fieldcrest.
Record Watch
Normal Community boy’s coach Dave Witzig is tied with former Rock Island coach Thom Sigel for the most Classic coaching wins at 58. His first opportunity to break the record didn’t go as planned, as Bradley-Bourbonnais defeated the Iron behind a 24-point performance by Brayden Long.
Long is the son of Bradley-Bourbonnais assistant coach Eric Long, and a transfer from Yorkville Christian, where he was a starting guard for the defending Class 1A state champion.
Odds and Ends
Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin’s Jake Hamilton set the school’s all-time scoring mark with 19 points in their opening round game against North Chicago. Hamilton, a Quincy University recruit, has 1,326 points in his career to date.
