2019 Tournament Tidbits: Tip-Off

December 26, 2019 by The Classic

Happenings of note as the 2019 State Farm Holiday Classic tips off:

  • Aurora Christian’s Taaj Davis scored his 1,000th point in a 78-48 victory over Wheaton St. Francis in Metro Suburban Conference Play on December 20th.
  • Bloomington Central Catholic girls coach Debbie Coffman posted career-win number 500 on Monday, December 9th with a 55-15 victory over Champaign St. Thomas More. Assistant coach Mendy Smith has accompanied her on the bench for each of those victories.
  • Mahomet-Seymour senior Grant Coleman scored his 1,000th point in a 63-62 loss to Normal University High on December 21st. Entering the State Farm Holiday Classic, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit has 1,017 career points, currently placing him sixth on the school’s all-time scoring list.
  • Calumet New Tech senior guard Da’vion Davis is out for the season after suffering a left hip labral tear. Last season, Davis averaged a team-high 20.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 1.5 assists per game. Davis was just 59 points away from 1,000 points in his career and was on pace to break the Warriors’ all-time scoring record of 1,050 points when he sustained the injury.
  • Local athletic directors Stan Lewis of Normal West and Wendy Smith of Normal University High will retire at the end of the school year. Both have served The Classic both administratively and with venue assistance over the years and will be missed.
  • Normal Community guard and Alabama-Birmingham recruit Kylee Schneringer has sustained an injury and won’t be available for the remainder of the season.
  • Chicago Marist High School’s Sydney Affolter reached the 1,000-point milestone earlier this season. She is a junior.
