Highlights, notes & tidbits from Day 2 of the 2017 State Farm Holiday Classic:
More Records
On Day 1, Danville Schlarman’s girls team set the record for most points in a quarter with 31. They held the record for less than a day; Morton scored 36 in first quarter of game with Chicago North Lawndale later in the day. Their 86-26 victory was also placed them in a tie for the second highest scoring game in the girl’s side of the tournament.
Milestones
Bloomington’s Ellie Weltha became the school’s career scoring leader in a consolation round victory over Mahomet-Seymour. She eclipsed the former total of 1,394 with a short jump shot in the first quarter of the Raiders 58-22 victory.
Geneseo coach Scott Hardison hit the century mark with his 100th-career victory in a 54-46 consolation bracket win over Normal University High.
Working Overtime
Zion-Benton and Chatham Glenwood boys battled for four overtimes before the Zee-Bees came away with a 50-48 win. The game ties to the longest game in tournament history with Morton vs Chicago North Lawndale girls (2015) and Mahomet-Seymour vs Rock Island boys (2016).
Classic Career Scoring Watch
With 20 points in Annawan’s 69-48 quarterfinal win over Rock Falls in the Girls Small School Bracket, Arizona State recruit Jayde VanHyfte now has 317 career points in the State Farm Holiday Classic. Her sister Celina is the all-time leader with 358.
Community Service
Chicago St. Ignatius enjoyed a favorable championship bracket schedule and spent several hours volunteering for Home Sweet Home Ministries during the day. They later dispatched Springfield to move into the semifinals of the Girls Large School bracket.
Local Flavor
A local team advanced in each bracket after day two. Normal Community placed teams in the Large School Boys and Girls semifinals, and Bloomington Central Catholic’s teams are alive in the Small School Boys and Girls bracket, respectively.
