2016 Tournament Tidbits: Day 2

December 29, 2016 by The Classic

What a difference a year makes?

Last year’s epic four overtime girls’ game between Morton and North Lawndale seemed to be a rare feat at the time, as it set the record for the longest game in tourney history. Well, it stood alone at the top for just a year. On day two, the Rock Island and Mahomet-Seymour boys’ matched the feat in yet another four overtime classic. Mahomet-Seymour, led by Cory Noe’s 26 point performance, outlasted Rock Island to win 69-66.

Home of the Brave(ttes)?

For as long as we can remember, the Annawan Bravettes have had a VanHyfte pouring in the buckets at the State Farm Holiday Classic. Thus, it comes as no surprise that current Bravette, Jayde VanHyfte, is on the heels of replacing her sister, Celina, as the girls’ all-time scoring leader. Through ten tournament games, Jayde – a junior – is averaging 22.1 points. That puts her on pace to score 354 points. Celina, who now plays for SIU-Carbondale, holds the record at 358.

Trimble chasing history … and Aaron Simpson:

St. Joseph-Ogden senior Brandon Trimble has already left his mark on the State Farm Holiday Classic record books (last year’s scoring champion as well as a single game individual scoring performance in the top-5). This year, he is on pace to surpass the record for most points in a tournament. That record currently belongs to North Chicago star Aaron Simpson, who scored 135 points in 2011. Trimble has 71 points through the first two games, putting him on pace to put up 142 points.

Lucky 13?

Yesterday we wrote about the Bloomington Central Catholic’s girls team, a #13 seed, upsetting #4 seeded Peoria Christian. Today, they find themselves back in the tidbits after upsetting a very tough Danville Schlarman team who came in as the #5 seed. Maybe 13 isn’t such an unlucky number, as Central Catholic won the contest decisively with a score of 50-33.
