State Farm Holiday Classic announces scholarship winners

Bloomington, IL – The Classic Tournament, Inc., which organizes the largest, coed high school holiday basketball tournament in the nation called the State Farm Holiday Classic, has selected four winners as recipients of the 2011 Holiday Classic Scholarship award.  Each of the winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship to go directly to their college of choice to help pay for tuition costs.

Established to recognize and award scholarships to eligible high school seniors who participated in this past year’s tournament, a selection committee of former educators chose the winners based on their leadership skills and academic performance. Applicants were also asked to demonstrate their experiences in student activities and community service, and required to submit an essay titled “How my high school sports experience helped prepare me for success in higher education.”

The 2011 Holiday Classic Scholarship awards go to (in alphabetical order):

  • Nickolena Coop, Downs Tri-Valley High School – Nicki played basketball all four seasons and on the Viking track team for three. This Illinois State Scholar was on the high honor roll all four years, was a member of her church’s youth leadership team and has volunteered for the Gingerbread House, Dooley Park, and the Giving Tree. She also overcame adversity with ACL injuries to both knees during her past two basketball seasons. Nicki will attend St. Louis University in the fall and major in Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Blake Doane, Quincy Notre Dame High School – Blake ranks first academically in his class and played basketball, football and baseball all four years. He is an Illinois State Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society, and volunteers for various organizations like the Knights of Columbus, Exchange Club and St. Anthony’s Parish. He plans to attend Illinois State University in the fall and major in Actuarial Science.
  • Kayla Moore, Sterling Newman Central Catholic High School – Kayla played basketball and softball all four seasons, earning all-conference honors in both sports and was co-MVP this past season in basketball. She also participated in volleyball and cross country, and currently ranks fourth academically in her class. Kayla is secretary of her Key Club, and had lead roles in her school musical the last three seasons. She plans to attend the University of Illinois and major in Bio-Chemistry.
  • Ryan Schmidt, Bloomington Central Catholic High School – Ryan was a three-year varsity letter winner in basketball and four-year varsity letter winner in soccer for the Saints, being named MVP for both teams this past year. He is secretary for his Interact Club, attended the Catholic Student Leadership Conference, is on the National Honor Society and is an Illinois State Scholar. He has served as a vacation bible school camp counselor and volunteers at the Bickford House. Ryan will major in Business at the University of Illinois in the fall.

“We have honored many fine student-athletes in the past six years, and this year’s group of recipients is no exception,” said tournament vice-president Dave Oloffson. “Each year is a tough process for our selection committee, but these four student-athletes stood above the rest based on their involvement in school and their communities.”

Parking options at U.S. Cellular Coliseum

This will be the first year the Holiday Classic has used the U.S. Cellular Coliseum, and as excited as we are for this opportunity, we are aware that this poses some new parking situations for our teams and fans. Please review the below information before coming to Bloomington to watch your team play.

The official address of the U.S. Cellular Coliseum is 101 South Madison Street, Bloomington.

  • Fans/Parents/Media parking - The parking garage located near the southwest corner of the Coliseum (corner of Olive and Lee Streets) will be offering free, 4-hour parking during our event for fans. If you park there longer than four hours then you will risk getting a $25 ticket from the City of Bloomington. This garage should have plenty of parking for all fans and can be entered off of Olive Street or Lee Street, and fans can enter the Coliseum through the south VIP Suites/Administrative Office entrance to the Coliseum, pay and then take the elevator or stairs to the second floor concourse area.
  • Teams traveling in buses/vans – there is a small, circle drive on the south side of the Coliseum off of Olive Street in Bloomington. Please enter into this drive and drop off players and coaches. Teams can then enter through the VIP Suites/Administrative Offices entrance into the Coliseum and check in on their Team Pass list.
  • Team bus/van parking – while your team is playing, drivers can park buses and vans in the loading dock area on the west side of the Coliseum off of Lee Street, or see if there is any available spots along Front Street on the north side of the Coliseum. Drivers can then enter the facility at the north entrance off of Front Street. There will be a pass list at both the north and south entrances with all Team Pass lists.
  • Additional parking in downtown Bloomington – additional parking options can be found on the U.S. Cellular Coliseum website at http://www.uscellularcoliseum.com/directions/parking/, and directions to this facility can be found at http://www.uscellularcoliseum.com/directions/map/.
  • Downtown Bloomington Association – see what else downtown Bloomington has to offer at http://www.downtownbloomington.org/.

The pairings are set for the 2010 State Farm Holiday Classic, which will be held at four different venues in the Bloomington-Normal area Dec. 27-30. The field highlights nine teams that are currently undefeated, and 51 of the 64 teams with a .500 record or better.

The undefeated Chillicothe IVC boys and Bloomington Central Catholic girls’ teams received the top seeds in the Class 1A-2A brackets, while the Springfield girls and the undefeated Lombard Glenbard East boys’ team garnered the top seeds in the Class 3A-4A brackets.

For IVC (currently 6-0), they will be seeking their first ever title after playing in the Holiday Classic for the past 20 years. The Grey Ghosts will face a field that features second seed Rock Falls, third seed El Paso-Gridley and the fourth seed and undefeated Minonk Fieldcrest.

Glenbard East brings a 7-0 record into their first year at the tournament, and will face a bracket with three other undefeated teams in second seed Peoria Notre Dame (7-0), third seed Rock Island (7-0) and tournament newcomer Chicago North Lawndale (2-0). Last year’s tournament runner-up, Rockton-Hononegah, received the fourth seed in this bracket.

The girls’ 1A-2A field includes 11 teams that won regional titles last year, including the Class 2A state champion and this year’s top seed Central Catholic. The top five seeds in this bracket are currently 42-7, including second seeded Pana (10-1), third seed and 2009 Class 2A fourth place finisher Kankakee Bishop McNamara (5-2), fourth seed Annawan (8-2) and the five seed Brimfield (10-2), who finished 2009 in fourth place in Class 1A.

Springfield, who finished 2009 with the Class 3A third place trophy, will take on a Class 3A-4A girls’ field featuring perennial power and second seed Peoria Richwoods (9-1), which owns an overall 30-6 tournament record since 2001. The third seed went to undefeated and first year tournament participant Champaign Centennial (9-0), with the fourth seed going to 9-2 Park Ridge Maine South.

“We continue to attract what we feel is the best basketball this side of March,” tournament vice-president Dave Oloffson says. “The three new participants bring a combined 18-0 record to our already highly competitive 64-team field.”

Throughout the tournament, live game updates, box scores and tidbits will be posted on the official tournament Web site, www.theclassic.org, and on both Facebook and Twitter. All-tournament passes may be purchased through the State Farm Employees Activities Association or by contacting a participating team.

State Farm Holiday Classic set for December 27-30

Bloomington, IL – The 32nd annual installment of the State Farm Holiday Classic will boast one new venue and some of the top talent in the state. The largest, coed high school holiday tournament in the nation tips off December 27, 28, 29 & 30, and marks the twelfth consecutive year with State Farm Insurance® as the title sponsor.

The Holiday Classic is proud to announce a new partnership with the U.S. Cellular Coliseum as a host venue at this year’s event. The downtown Bloomington facility, a long time sponsor of the Holiday Classic, will now host the girls’ portion of the 64 team tournament.

“In addition to four very competitive games, the one thing we are proud to offer our participating teams each year is the chance to play those games in top-notch facilities with exciting atmospheres,” said tournament Vice-President Dave Oloffson. “With the addition of the Coliseum, we continue to provide all 64 teams with the best basketball facilities our community has to offer. The support of those venues is very much appreciated!”

“We are excited to be able to add the prestigious State Farm Holiday Classic to our ever growing list of events this,” said Bart Rogers, Vice President/General Manager of the U.S Cellular Coliseum. “This event provides a great economic impact on the Twin Cities with the out of town teams and guests that attend, and we look forward to showcasing our facility to them for many years to come.”

This year’s field will once again feature some of the top talent in the state. Rock Island and senior star Chasson Randle, who is ranked as the #6 point guard in the nation by ESPN, will take on a large school boy’s field that features the #1 junior in the state in North Chicago’s Aaron Simpson, and Peoria Notre Dame’s talented big man Max Bielfeldt. Chicago-land powerhouses North Lawndale and Glenbard East are new additions to this year’s field. Western Michigan recruit Hayden Hoerdemann and Bloomington Central Catholic highlight a small school boys’ field that features perennial state powerhouses in Rock Falls, Quincy Notre Dame, Minonk Fieldcrest, Chillicothe IVC and Providence St. Mel.

The girls’ portion of the State Farm Holiday Classic remains one of the toughest tournaments throughout the Midwest. Class 2A state-champ Bloomington Central Catholic returns the talented duo of Allie Norton and Jess Reinhart to face a small school girls’ bracket with ten teams that won at least a Regional championship last season. Springfield High, with two consecutive state final finishes the last two years, features all-state junior Zahna Medley to counter Peoria Richwoods all-state senior Mariah Smith, Morton’s sophomore shot-blocker Sarah Livingston and newcomer Champaign Centennial’s young and talented group in the large school girls’ bracket.

“Most holiday tournaments measure themselves by the number of highly-ranked teams and players they bring in,” said Oloffson. “With the talent displayed in Bloomington-Normal over the holidays, we feel our players, coaches and fans will be treated to a great experience this December at the Classic.”

All games will be played at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center, U.S. Cellular Coliseum, Normal Community High School and Normal West High School. All teams are guaranteed 4 games over the 4-day event.

For more tournament information and a complete list of the 64-team field, visit the official Web site at www.theclassic.org or follow the event on Facebook and Twitter. All-tournament passes may be purchased beginning in November through the State Farm Employees Activities Association, or by contacting your local participating team.
